What Made the News in 2009…
The Surrey Rebels would like to again thank all of its volunteers, sponsors and supporters for making its third season in British Columbia Intermediate B Lacrosse League another great success. For the second straight season, the team got off to a great start and ended up sporting a winning record at 11-7-0, good for 2nd place in the South Conference. Unfortunately also for the second straight season, we were knocked out in the first round of the playoffs.
Individual highlights included Brad Olson winning the League Most Valuable Player Award and being the second player in team history to be name to the League All-Star Team. Olson also led the team in assists (38 – tied for 1st in the league) and points (60 – 5th in the league), while Derek Kolins led the team in goals (24 – 16th in the league) and Max Richards finished tied for 28th in league scoring (36 points).
Special thanks go out to our rookie head coach, Padraic Lawrence, his assistant coach Tallyn Wittal and trainer Andrew McBride, for keeping the team focussed and committed, especially during times when key players were out with suspension, grad commitments or injury. Thanks also go out to Sue Finley for taking on the role of team manager and doing a fine job coordinating volunteers, filling out and submitting player registration cards, gamesheets and stats sheets to the league commissioner, doing scorekeeping at home games and sending out bulletins to players and parents. I would like to also acknowledge the work of Joe and Michelle Toneff for once again running an extremely successful pub night, Paula Kolins for making sure our jerseys were always clean, and Christine Geyer for keeping both the banking and the general manager in line during the hectic season. Finally, I would like to thank the Surrey Lacrosse Association and its 2009 President, Dennis Ewen, for their continuing support of the senior program in Surrey.
We have nine players graduating from the program and expect to see all of them at Junior Rebels training camp in early 2010. We expect the majority of the 15 remaining players to be back for the 2010 season and trust that the majority of graduating Midget players will be out at training camp. Our head coach and trainer will be back for 2010, but we will likely have to recruit a new assistant coach and team manager during the off-season.
